CANDIDA diet and tips

Candida overgrowth is an unusual condition in the way that it causes such a wide range of symptoms. In fact, this is the main reason why it is so difficult to diagnose correctly. Symptoms can include headaches, digestive problems and more. But there is also a link between Candida and intolerances to foods like dairy and gluten.
In today’s post I’m going to take a closer look at food sensitivities and intolerances, and examine just how they can be caused by a yeast overgrowth. I’ll also share a research report that tells us exactly how fast Candida Albicans can penetrate your intestinal walls, and explain how you can prevent this from happening. But first I want to go over some basic information on how Leaky Gut Syndrome can lead to food sensitivities.

Leaky Gut Syndrome and Candida

Some of the most common symptoms of a Candida overgrowth are food sensitivities. These are a result of Leaky Gut Syndrome, a condition that often accompanies Candida. For some more detailed information, I have written a post explaining the connection between these two conditions.
Leaky Gut Syndrome is usually defined as the inflammation and weakening of the intestinal walls. This might be as a result of a number of different factors, but in the case of Candida sufferers it is usually caused by the pathogenic, fungal form of Candida Albicans.
In its yeast form, Candida actually poses little threat to our general health. But when those yeast cells convert to a fungal form and grow long tubes named hyphae, the Candida colonies in your gut can spread and grow much more quickly. The Candida fungus can ‘burrow’ into your intestinal lining and widen the spacing between the cells in that lining. This allows undigested food particles to escape into your bloodstream, triggering an immediate immune response which leads to a longer term allergy or sensitivity.

Candida and your intestinal walls

Sometimes it can be difficult to realize just how potent an organism Candida really is. After all, it usually resides in our guts and most of us never actually see it. Well, there is some clear evidence showing how aggressive Candida can be, particularly when it comes to attacking your intestinal membrane.
How exactly does Candida Albicans manage to pull off this trick? A research study published in Mycoses magazine looked at the speed with which Candida Albicans can penetrate host tissues. Researchers took human epithelial tissues from the vaginal and esophagus, then infected them with Candida Albicans. They then measured exactly how long it would take for the Candida Albicanshyphae to penetrate the tissue.
According to the study, “The duration of Candida penetration of human epithelium varied between 22 and 59 h.” In simple terms this means that it took 22-59 hours for the Candida fungus to completely penetrate through the tissue. They went on to state that “If Candida cells are able to invade host tissues without being restrained by natural defense mechanisms they may create a realistic threat of invasion of blood vessels .. within approximately 1.5 days.”
We should of course remember that these experiments were conducted in a laboratory. In our bodies, Candida Albicans has to contend with the various elements of our immune system. However, this study does suggest that when our immune systems are weakened, penetration of the intestinal membrane can happen very quickly indeed.
This is particularly relevant to Candida sufferers. When a Candida overgrowth disturbs the balance in your gut flora, it weakens a crucial part of your immune system. And when this happens, it leaves you particularly vulnerable to developing conditions like Leaky Gut Syndrome.

How can you prevent Candida from weakening your intestinal walls?

We might know the way in which Candida leads to Leaky Gut Syndrome, and the food intolerances that accompany it, but can we actually do anything about it? Actually, there are a couple of different things you can do to prevent this from happening.

  1. Prevent the Candida from switching to its fungal form
Candida Albicans can only cause Leaky Gut Syndrome if it is allowed to switch to its fungal form, and it needs the right pH level in your gut to do this. Two ways to maintain the correct pH level are by taking some good probiotics and cutting out fruit from your diet. Any good Candida treatment plan will use a combination of diet and supplements to keep your Candida under control.
  2. Support your immune system
Your own immune system will always be the best defense against Candida. Supplements like probiotics can help, but you should also consider a detox plan and make some appropriate lifestyle changes. Food intolerances and allergies are often the result of Leaky Gut Syndrome and a weakened immune system, so give your body all the support it needs to defend itself.
  3. Avoid inflammatory foods
If you are following a Candida diet then you are avoiding most inflammatory foods already. Many of the items on my ‘foods to avoid’ list are inflammatory (like sugars, alcohol, trans fats and processed meats) . These foods can worsen the inflammation in your intestinal walls and weaken them even further.
The first stage of the candida diet is strict. .

The anti-candida diet that most people use is one that is only to avoid candida growth. However, there is another aspect to food choices with candida, and that is allergies (mold or yeast). Many people who unknowingly have had candida for years, and it has progressed into an auto-immune disease like FM, CFS, MS, or lupus... have more problems than a person who is just starting with some candida problems. So... you can see how important DIET, and FOOD COMBINING can be. One person on this list may eat many of the foods recommended for the anti-candida diet and do fine - another one CANNOT ~ WHY? because their system is more sensitive from the accumulative effects of candidiasis over a longer period of time ~ and it has done more damage to their body systems.

In essence, the Candida control diet is a low-fat, sugar free, high-complex carb diet. Besides discouraging candida growth - it is healthy.

The foods you eat must be nutritious, wholesome, and fresh (organic if possible) because these qualities ensure that your body will receive the most nutrients possible. The ultimate goal is: TO HELP THE BODY HELP ITSELF. As your health improves your immune system will become stronger and stronger - and will work against the candida overgrowth. The best foods to help you regain your health contain complex carbs - and unrefined carbs, and include vegetables and whole grains. The foods must be as pure and unprocessed as possible. READ ALL LABELS carefully!

BEVERAGES: Such as filtered or purified water, are highly recommended. To liven up your water, you can add a touch of fresh lime or lemon. Other beverages can be herbal teas by "Traditional Medicinals"... which are organic, and have been found to have less problems with mold. FRESH vegetable juices are always fine ~ and offer a lot of nutritional value.

BROWN RICE - healthy and safe food - but be sure to buy real brown rice and not an instant or flavored version.

BUTTER - unsalted - or GHEE (which is clarified butter) is allowed in moderation. Sesame tahini and spreads without sugar or peanuts are usually ok occasionally.

LEGUMES - such as beans (including adzuki, anasazi, black, cannellini, fava, great northern, kidney, lentil, lima, mung, navy, northern, pinto, red, soy, and string), lentils, and peas, such as black eyed peas and chickpeas.

MEATS - that are unprocessed and that do not contain antibiotics are ok. Some examples are beef (lean cuts only), chicken (preferably without the skin), eggs, any fresh or frozen fish that has not been breaded, lamb, pork (lean cuts only), seafood, turkey, and veal.

OILS - make sure the oils you buy are unrefined, cold-pressed, and preferably from a health-food store. Permitted oils are corn, linseed, olive, safflower, sunflower, soy, and walnut. Olive oil is the best oil to cook foods in and is great as a salad dressing. Fish oils are also ok.

THICKENERS for sauces and gravies are arrowroot powder and cornstarch.

TOMATOES: should be eaten FRESH and ALONE. Because they are a 'fruit', combination with proteins cause fermentation in the stomach and high amounts of allergies with candidiasis. Canned tomatoes contain added ingredients, including sweeteners and citric acid.

WHEATLESS FLOURS: such as arrowroot, amaranth, buckwheat, corn, millet, rice, potato, spelt and soy are good if you are allergic to wheat.

WHOLE GRAINS: barley, corn, flaxseed, millet, oats and oatment (not instant), brown rice or wild rice (NOT white rice), rye, and wheat, are allowed but may have to be eaten in moderation. Grains that contain GLUTEN (wheat, rye, barley and oats) can cause digestive symptoms, so you may want to try healthy grain alternatives such as buckwheat, teff, quinoa and amaranth.

VEGETABLES: AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT PART OF THE CANDIDA DIET! At least 50% of your daily foods should be made up of vegetables. A diet of complex carbs, legumes and 3-6 servings of vegetables daily can nearly defeat constipation - unless there is physical damage. If the digestive tract has been severely damaged or is clogged with poisons, these must be flushed out before normal, natural digestion can take place - this is why the Attogram products sold here, taken in drink (purge) form 2x a day is so mandatory.

Health experts say, "Death begins in the Colon" (as well as 90% of disease!). Health beginjs in the colon too. It is possible to reverse even severe damage, sometimes, if caught before it is too late.

Throughout Candida treatment you must have at LEAST one bowel movement per day, every day. If you do not, poisons accumulate more quickly during the stresses of treatment and if your system gets clogged, especially at this sensitive time, more damage can be done to the colon than under normal circumstances. SO EAT VEGETABLES! raw, juiced, and/or cooked, 3-6 times daily. If you cannot have a bowel movement grind up some FLAX SEED in a coffee grinder and eat 4-6 tbsp.'s of it. Take acidophilus, magnesium glycinate, DRINK at LEAST 1/2 your body weight in ounces of pure water daily. DO WHATEVER IT TAKES to bring on a bowel movement - keep them regular. AVOID DRUGS if at all possible.

NUTS: such as almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, filberts, pecans and walnuts are allowed, but you should either shell them yourself or buy them from a health food store (raw) to avoid harmful additives. Roasted, salted, and honey-coated nuts should not be eaten. PEANUTS and PEANUT BUTTER are one of the worst offenders for candida as they are loaded with mycotoxins (mold) and feed candida.

POPCORN: Popped, without oil and eaten without butter (or use GHEE - clarified butter - or unsalted butter and SEA SALT) is a great snack food and can be eaten between meals. MICROWAVE popcorn is not acceptable because of the many flavor/color additives, etc. Also - microwaves kill all enzymes in food - and is a subject that ALL should research and study.

BREADS: No breads with yeast/malt/sugar, or honey, etc. are allowed. Don't forget that yeast is put into bread to make it rise. Moreover, flour often worsens symptoms for candidiasis victims too. Gluten grains can exacerbate fungal growth by providing a ready food source for yeast, by irritating the intestinal tract, and by provoking tissue, organ, and blood system disorders in those people known to have Candidiasis.

MILK: should usually not be used because it commonly causes allergic reactions (ear aches in children, mucous in the throat, colon and skin eruptions and respiratory ailments) and because it contains lactose, another name for milk sugar. Milk can also contain trace amounts of up to 80 different antibiotics. The only exception allowed is plain, unsweetened yogurt. You can make it yourself (and have a better chance of it being lactose free - or extremely low in lactose) or buy it - at health food stores, and check that there are NO additional additives like fruit, fake sugars, etc. Good yogurt will have active live cultures of L-acidophilus and more. plain yogurt can be combined with powdered spirulina for a GOOD, healthy, brain-clearing, and energy-giving...in-between meal.

SALT - Salt is a food additive that has been excessively over-used by food manufacturers as well as the public. It has been chemically cleaned, and then aluminum is added to make it flow smoothly - followed by dextrose (corn syrup) to cover up the bitterness of the aluminum. I recommend Orsa Salt - or Sea Salt. It is pure with a natural trace of minerals and no other additives.

SALAD GREENS: use the Boston or Butter lettuce, green leaf lettuce, endive, and romaine. These dark green leaves contain vitamins, trace minerals, and are a fine source of dietary fiber. The fiber content of "iceberg" (also called Head) lettuce washes through the stomach and colon and is practically devoid of any vitamins or minerals. It is also relatively high, compared to other vegetables in 'arsenic' which accounts for its bitter taste. When dining out ask for the good lettuces listed or raw spinach (plain, not with bacon bits and other artificial additives).

REMEMBER!!! - For several reasons, the 'mainstay' of therapy for any of the yeast-connected illnesses must be directed at lifestyle/dietary changes....

AN INCORRECT DIET has been one of the major reasons you have gotten into trouble with candida...

UNTIL YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM is strong enough to handle the western diet, foods that stimulate yeast growth must be eliminated...

Nourishment MUST be provided to rebuild or replace your damaged immune system, rather than strengthening the pervasive candida! Rebuilding sets the stage for resolution of MANY symptoms you have of candida related complex.... such as dry skin, dandruff, endless itching, nose congestion...

If you intend to work towards long-term wellness - feeling better faster depends on rebalancing your body's yeast-human interaction. Eating the right diet incredibly speeds up the process of getting well!

FOOD COMBINING: This issue can be complex - but I will just list the basics here:

1. Eat protein-digested foods separately from carbohydrate-digested foods or starchy foods. This is simple for vegetarians - it is okay to eat legumes and whole grains or starchy vegetables together. People who eat meat will have to get used to eating meats and proteins without starches (rice, potatoes) on the side. Meats, eggs, and most diary products are best not eaten at the same meal with starches such as bread, crackers, pasta, cereal, or potatoes. Following this rule helps speed digestion and healing. Meats may be eaten with vegetables (except potatoes), which are less starchy than whole grains.

2. Eat any fruit (eaten in later phases in your candida diet) alone - or first - about 45min. before a meal, so as not to hinder digestion. Stomach upset, indigestion and fermentation of stomach foods may occur if raw fruit is eaten after (or with) a meal.

3. Avoid drinking liquids with meals.

During candida treatment food combining is very beneficial for the body and can greatly assist healing when the principles are followed daily.

Caprol, liquid bentonite and psyllium husk & seeds , and acidophilus are used together in a DRINK form. - there is a different action than in taking each of these individually - in powder, tablet or whatever other form.

CAPROL Liquid and CAPRYLIC ACID (tablets or capsules) are two different things... CAPROL is a liquid and acts differently on the body. Please read below on the differences - especially read what happens to the liver with caprylic acid...

Caprol:
Caprol, containing liquid caprylic acid (3600 mg per oz) and oleic acids, is a broad spectrum anti-fungal agent against Candida albicans and other fungi.........Caprylic acids antifungal properties were the subject of a study at the Japanese Niigata University School of Medicine: "the fungicidal effect of caprylic acid on Candida albicans was exceedingly powerful...Caprylic acid exhibits the most remarkable fungistatic and fungicidal properties of all normal saturated fatty acids with even numbered carbon atoms studied.

This information about caprylic acid's powerful antifungal properties was reported by the Japanese in 1961. However not until two decades later was it further discovered by a Canadian, Andrew Gutauskas, B.S. Pharmacy, that the benefits of caprylic acid are further enhanced when its transit through the intestinal tract is slowed. Caprylic acid must exert its fungicidal effect in the intestinal tract or not at all. The longer it can react the better.

Unfortunately, caprylic acid is a substance that is normally quite rapidly absorbed into the intestinal tract and routed directly to the liver. There it is quickly metabolized and does not succeed at entering the general circulation. Just ten minutes after the oral intake of straight caprylic acid, more than 90% can be traced in the portal vein on its way to the liver. For this reason, the quite powerful caprylic acid has little anti-Candida albicans effect, both intestinally and systemically. This fact, however, is significantly altered if its absorption can be somehow slowed, allowing it to remain in the intestine for a longer period of time in order to complete its fungicidal mission. In this program, caprylic acid acquires its needed sustained-release properties from gel, formed by the mixture of Caprol, colon cleansers, and water. This thick gel traps the caprylic acid and slows its transit through the colon.

Uncontrolled surges of caprylic acid into the liver are the most probable cause of adverse reactions to caprylic acid: however, while in this gelled state, caprylic acid does not escape into the lifer. It is no surprise, then, that no adverse reactions to this gelled form of caprylic acid have been reported, even among individuals who previously reacted to other caprylic acid products.

Traditional caprylic acid preparations exist as capsules and tablets, but the preference is the liquid form. This mixing causes the caprylic acid to interact with the olive oil, thereby amplifying its fungicidal effects far beyond what caprylic acid has traditionally offered.

.....Oleic acid, the second acid ingredient in Caprol, is found naturally in olive oil. It too, has significant CRC battling effects. Normally harmless Candida albicans (if in small quantities) can convert, or mutate, into a disruptive mycelial form for several reasons - overuse of antibiotics being a prime example. When this happens, root-like tentacles are formed, which allow the new harmful fungi to penetrate the mucosa (or lining) of the intestinal wall and enter the blood stream. From there, the fungi easily gain access to other parts of the body. Oleic acid follows the mycelial, root like tentacles of candida albicans to the base of the root and kills it there. Oleic acid also hinders any additional conversion of Candida albicans yeast into its mycelial fungal form. ....As explained, oleic acid is of great importance in the destruction of CRC."

Also, the Caprylic acid in Caprol, being a liquid, has a coating action on the intestinal wall, which tablets and capsules cannot match. As the liquid Caprol is dispersed in the Psyllium/Bentonite gel, it releases its caprylic acid throughout the entire length of the intestinal tract."
